You are Not a Gadget. Jaron Lanier.

Lanier, Jaron. You are Not a Gadget Knopf New York 2010. N; December 2010.

Fascinating. This is the inventor of virtual reality who takes the soft view on the ontology of the “Brights”, on their website. Computer scientist and engineer, he doesn’t agree with Dennet and company that only non-mysterious things are real. The point of the book, I think, is that we are headed for mediocrity with the ideology that sees the Internet as a potential meta-entity with a life of its own. Software is never creative, people are creative. He links the olfactory sense to language, which appeals to my orientation.

For me, artificial intelligence will never have human feel, because human feel is evolved, ergo made up of all sorts of oddball characteristics that have nothing necessarily to do with what we now need or want to do. 8.4
